Banks-Vernonia State Trail
The Banks-Vernonia State trail runs from Banks to Vernonia (surprise, surprise), just like the name says. It is a completely paved trail that often runs parallel with Highway 47. Biking, walking and even horse back riding are all allowed. On any given day you are likely to come across many bicyclists and hikers enjoying all that this trail has to offer. There are multiple parking lots along the trail for convenience. A popular access point is the Beaver Creek Trailhead, which is about 5 miles from Vernonia. I think it makes a nice spot to start, hike or bike into Vernonia, have a yummy lunch and then head back.
I've hiked starting in Vernonia, from the Beaver Creek, Top Hill, Manning and Buxton Trailheads. I've never started in Banks though. The entire thing is about 21 miles, it's well cared for and a very enjoyable trail to use any time of year. I've even walked it in the winter. It's so peaceful when covered in snow and you can see nothing but your own foot prints on the trail! The bridge at the Buxton trailhead (see photo below) that then goes towards Manning, is so lovely! The view of the creek that it spans from above is picture perfect! In fact, once I came across a bride and groom doing their wedding photos there. I rate the Banks-Vernonia Trail a 10 out of 10. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed!
