Saddle Mountain State Natural Area

The Saddle Mountain State Natural Area has views that will leave you breathless.  Just 60 miles outside of Portland, on the way to the coast, it has a total of 3,226 acres to enjoy.   The hiking trail is fairly short lengthwise, just 2.5 miles each way.  However, the trail is very steep with amazing changes in elevation (another reason that you'll be breathless).  Once you reach the summit, you can see all the way from the Pacific Ocean to Mount Hood on a clear day.  You need to be okay with heights, or at least able to focus in and not get distracted by nerves.  Most of the trail is in great condition, but some of the upper sections are definitely going to make you want hiking shoes with great traction.  There are lots of viewpoints along the way that will give you some perfect Kodak moments, not just at the summit.  From Highway 26, following the well done signage to the Saddle Mountain Trailhead.  It's about 7 miles on a paved but very rough road.  There is a pay-to-park parking lot with restrooms.  The lot can get full and people park on the side of the road too, which can sometimes get dicey.

I've hiking Saddle Mountain many times.  I enjoy it because it's a good workout, but only 5 miles of total hiking.  I like the challenge of the elevation, the gorgeous views, the fact that the trailhead is easy to find and that it's pretty close to home.   I'm a little iffy when it comes to heights, but the view at the top of the summit is worth any discomfort!  I've been up there on clear days when you can literally see all the way to the ocean.  You're up so high that you can see 360 degrees, in all directions, at all of the hilltops, mountains and even the Columbia River.

One time I hiked up in the dark before dawn, so that I could be up at the summit for the sunrise.  I gotta say, that was a rough hike because my body was NOT happy that I was hiking in practically the middle of the night.  But the sunrise was gorgeous!   Another time I thought I'd hike up there on the Fourth of July in the evening, so that I could watch the fireworks from the summit.  That one didn't work out, I don't recommend it.  I thought we'd be able to see the fireworks from the coast to Portland.  Reality was that you're up so high that the fireworks look like little tiny ants off in the distance.  Plus, it was oh so cold and windy up there after the sun set.  What I do recommend is hiking up during the daytime.  Bring snacks and plenty of water, as it is a workout.  Try and go on a clear day so that you can really take advantage of the amazing view.  Be prepared to be blown away (Not literally, although it is windy.  But figuratively.  The view is one of a kind!)  I rate Saddle Mountain a 9.5 out of 10.  It's a hard hike, with stunning views, you won't be disappointed!  Plus you'll have earned a good cheeseburger once you're done!
